Bali, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, is a top tourist destination, yet beneath its beauty lies a significant issue of poverty that often goes unnoticed. While tourism has fueled economic growth in some areas, many Balinese communities, particularly in rural regions, continue to face challenges such as low wages, limited access to education, and inadequate healthcare. The stark contrast between the thriving tourist industry and the living conditions of local people highlights the urgent need for sustainable efforts to improve lives, create job opportunities, and support education. These initiatives are essential for lifting these communities out of poverty and ensuring a more equitable future for all Balinese people.
Aura Sukma Insani Foundation (ASI) was founded by Ni Nyoman Padmadewi and Nyoman Sukadana, who have dedicated themselves to helping others since their marriage and move to Singaraja in 1989. Starting with financial support for 12 students in 2006, their efforts have grown, thanks to the generosity of supporters, allowing ASI to sponsor more students each year.
The Aura Sukma Insani Foundation (ASI) is dedicated to this mission, believing in the transformative power of education and providing assistance to those in need. Based in Sambangan, near Singaraja and Lovina in northern Bali's Buleleng Regency, the foundation operates in one of Bali's most underdeveloped regions. Buleleng is the island’s largest regency, covering over 23.6% of Bali’s total area. However, it also has the highest poverty rates.
Many families in Buleleng live in modest, often overcrowded conditions, with six or seven individuals sharing a single room. Certain areas are prone to unsanitary living conditions, with open kitchens, poorly attached roofs, bamboo walls, and a lack of proper sanitation facilities like toilets. The region’s vast population in need emphasizes the importance of the foundation’s work in addressing these issues.
Through its social program, Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work (PSPW), the ASI Foundation actively engages in various community support initiatives, focusing on health, education, and welfare. This program aims to provide essential resources and services to those most in need, fostering a sense of solidarity and compassion within the community.
Thanks to the continued support from generous sponsors, ASI Foundation is able to maintain a dedicated team that manages its programs across education, social welfare, and healthcare. Together, these efforts aim to bridge the gap between the tourism-driven prosperity in some parts of Bali and the poverty-stricken areas that are often overlooked.
In addition to the sponsorship program, the foundation provides essential grocery support to families facing poverty or working in low-paying jobs and initiates various projects with the help of its supporters.
With a deep passion for community service, the foundation has sponsored hundreds of students and provided essential services to those in need through the support of generous donors.
The Aura Sukma Insani Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those in need. While donations are crucial, the foundation also focuses on shifting the mindset of parents, students, and the community through education. The Balinese staff, equipped with language skills and cultural sensitivity, works closely with local communities to foster sustainable efforts, empowering individuals and communities to realize their potential.
